COOLICAN & COMPANY

ENDLESSLY DURABLE - PURPOSEFULLY MADE

The Madison Chair

Coolican & CompanyComment

A chair was always on the list for Coolican & Company. The design process is always interesting and for this chair it was no different.

For inspiration we took a good hard look at Shaker design. Their furniture evolves comfortably into a modern context and the more we explore it, the more we see the brilliance of it. While it has been interpreted before, we feel we want to do more than just pay homage to Shaker, but rather get to the core of what makes this honest design so appealing.

So with that influence, we focused on simplicity, comfort, strength and functionality. After several incarnations, tweaks and redesigns, the Madison chair was born.

The chair is made of Ontario white oak, blackened in a time tested process. As with all of our pieces, durability is of primary importance. All joints are glued and pegged, with the backrest the pegs are done in a brass peg to illustrate the process. The seat is furnished in a strong and beautiful Danish cord, designed by Donna Kim (she truly is a master).

Great as a dining chair or as occasional chair, the Madison chair will make its official debut at IDS16 in January. However, we are offering a presale discount to those who want to be first to purchase this chair.

So finally the Wallace Lamps are complete and ready for purchase.

The Wallace lamp makes for a great desk or bedside lamp. Constructed of Ontario Black Walnut, a cast gypsum shade and brass accents, the lamp sits on a tripod base with a fully swivelling shade. All handcrafted here in Toronto.

We've made a limited number of these, so we suggest ordering one before they are gone.

Wax on, Wax off

Peter CoolicanComment

We've always used it, so now we carry it. Clapham's Beeswax furniture finish.

Clapham's is a company after our own heart. Roger and Anne have been making great beeswax products on their farm in the Fraser Valley since 1971. The recipe for their furniture wax is a traditional English mixture that was passed on through the family. We use it because we believe it provides great protection with just the right shine, and It's safe for children and pets. You can actually eat the stuff, but I wouldn't recommend it.

All of our wood products are shipped with a hard oil finish and a fresh coat of Clapman's wax. We recommend reapplying wax as needed, which should be about twice a year. Waxing your furniture will not only make it look great, but prolong its life.

But be warned, there is a certain Zen in process that can be addictive.

Spring Is Here And We're Ready To Celebrate

maple stool colour pipes.jpg

We're bringing maple back. Minimalist and fresh, this Ontario White Maple line-up is not your token maple furniture. It’s matte white oil finish emphasizes the clean lines of each piece and stays true to the natural colour of the wood. A modern yet versatile look that’s at home in a sleek condo, a Scandinavian cabin, or anything inbetween.

We're starting with a batch of our classic Palmerston stools in that are available for pre order now. Next we’re doing small batches of both our Crawford side table and our Rusholme coffee table, both in maple.

But we're not stopping there. By popular demand, we're putting out a full lineup in Ontario black walnut. Twelve more Palmerston stools, six Crawford side tables and six Rusholme coffee tables. All available for pre order now.

In other news, we had a great time on the set of Cityline last week! See some Coolican & Company products on air Thursday April 2nd at 9 AM

We're also happy to announce that our products can be viewed and purchased at a great pop up shop called SOUVENIR BEACH HOUSE at Project Gallery at 1109 Queen Street West (between Jones & Carlaw) from April 23-26th. Come check out an amazing curated collection.

Stay tuned for more... Including the much anticipated launch of the Wallace Lamp coming June 1st!

The Adelaide Benches are here!

Peter CoolicanComment

Our latest batch is done!

It takes a lot of work to produce a high quality product. Sourcing only the best wood our country has to offer, fabricating every part to exact specifications, milling, sanding, turning, assembling and then more sanding. Did I mention sanding? All finished by hand with the attention to detail that can only be accomplished by producing our products in small run batches.

Even before they were complete, the batch was half sold out and there are only 7 left (we made a bakers dozen this time). Currently there are only 4 of the full length benches left and due to customer feedback, we made 3 benches in a shorter 3' version.

Get one before they are gone!

The Emerson Candle

Peter CoolicanComment

The Emerson is back!

After plenty of love last week from The Globe and Mail and The Calgary Herald, we've started our second batch of this modern homage to the classic candlestick.

The candlesticks are made of solid Ontario Black Walnut, a solid brass bar and sits on a disk of cast gypsum. Alone or in an arrangement, these diminutive sticks are sure to garner attention.

If they appeal to you, pre-order today. This batch is almost sold out and production hasn't even finished yet. The new batch should be ready to be shipped out by mid March.

Take a look at the product page to order or for more details.

Our Next Batch

Peter CoolicanComment

The Palmerston stools in Ontario Black Walnut are gone. The limited run batch have all found homes across the country. Because they were so popular, we're thinking we have to make some more in the future. But until then we want to introduce our next batch of products.

The Adelaide bench in solid Ontario Black Walnut.

This versatile bench was a favourite at IDS and is a favourite of ours as well.  Great in a front hall, the end of a bed or even pulled up as extra seating at a table, it's a great bench that will last a lifetime. There are only 12 in the batch and there are only 8 left. The bench normally comes in a 4' length, but due to some requests from fans, we will be making a shorter shorter 3' version. But there's only 3 of them.

We're hard at work making them and they will be ready by the end of February. Pre order yours today...before they're all gone!

IDS15

Peter CoolicanComment

The show truly exceeded our expectations. We met talented people, made some new friends and saw some amazing things. In short, we had a blast.

The show was our opportunity to introduce small batch furniture to the world, and it couldn't have been more well received! People were excited to find that great design and heirloom quality craftsmanship could be affordable.

We are also proud to announce that the Coolican & Company booth won the Silver Best Booth award. We'd like to congratulate our friend Heidi Earnshaw for her stellar booth and for grabbing the gold. If you don't know Heidi's work, check it out here heidiearnshawdesign.com

So what's next?

Up next for Coolican & Company is one of our favourite products, the Adelaide Bench.  This incarnation of the bench will be made of solid Niagara Black Walnut and finished in a natural, low VOC oil. The batch will consist of only 12 benches and they are already being scooped up. Click on the link to check it out and pre-order yours today before they're all gone!

IDS runs from January 22nd to the 25th and features designers and makers from around the globe and from here in Toronto.

In the meantime we’ve gotten some press. Peter is featured in the Saturday January 17 Toronto Star in the Homes section.

We Get By With a Little Help From Our Friends

Coolican & CompanyComment

Much like sharing a meal with good friends, there is something really special about working with talented people. When those talented people are your friends, well, that's hard to beat.

On a cold Saturday morning a few weeks ago, our friend (and talented cinematographer), Stefan Herbruger came by the workshop. We'd asked him to shoot a short video about the making of a Coolican & Company piece. As the first sips of coffees were supped, and we chatted about the day ahead, two things were obvious: it was going to be a fun day and the resulting video was going to be great. It's exciting when you get to work with passionate people, and it's not hard to tell that Stefan has a passion for his craft. Like any great craftsman he puts quality first and foremost, and does things the way they are supposed to be done.

When we needed some music, we asked our man Benj (Jordan Benjamin). Another craftsman in his own right, he took all of two seconds to understand what we were looking for, and sent us a track he put together this summer in Montreal. He nailed it.

Take a look at the video on our home page and let us know what you think!

Welcome to Coolican & Company.
